Today’s five voluntary RAF Pipe Bands are formed on a geographical basis of RAF Stations throughout the United Kingdom. Their aim is to foster a practical interest in piping & drumming within the RAF and local community, whilst improving the welfare and morale of both Service and civilian members by providing a cultural and recreational activity. RAF Piping & Drumming exposure both at home and abroad in providing musical support for RAF ceremonial, social and charitable events continues to gain an increasingly high profile. RAF pipers and drummers have appeared at venues around the World from countries as far a field as the Falkland Islands, Europe, Russia, Africa and Australia.
Royal Air Force Leuchars is situated on the East Coast of Fife, approximately 8 miles north of St. Andrews. The station is the home of three Air Defence Squadrons, 43 and 111 Fighter Squadrons and 56(R) Squadron who currently operate Tornado F3 aircraft and make up part of the United Kingdom’s Rapid Reaction Force. 56(R) squadron is the Operational Conversion Unit for the Tornado F3.
The Band comprises RAF Officers, SNCO, airmen and civilian members and wears the ‘Royal Air Force tartan’ which was endorsed by the Air Force Board in 2004.
